Rest among the vineyards

November 15th, 2008

Recycling the wood of fifty casks in disuse, the architect of Talca's University, Macarena Avila, she constructed a square of rest for agricultural workers to the interior of Casa Donoso, in the Maule Valley. The project was selected to take part in the National Contest of Projects of Degree of the Biennial show XVI of Architecture 2008.

She likes everything pleases in Talca. She does not know if they are its landscapes, its people, its food, its traditions or its crafts, but Macarena Avila (26) declares herself a fanatic of the land where she was born".  It is not only the city, is everything what includes the Maule Valley; a zone fills of surprises and shades ", she assures.

She wanted to study Architecture in Talca's University, and when it came the hour of choosing the topic for her final project - in the middle of the of 2006-chose to focus in one of the items most typical of her region: the world of the wine.

In the fourth year she had been employed at bordering vineyards to the city together with Cazú Zegers, my teacher of Workshop in this then, so she was acquainted with the topic. In addition, since we must construct our final projects, I was interested in the idea of an offer that was answering to the needs of the agricultural workers, but that also could be inserted in the wine route in tourist terms - makes clear  Macarena.

Following this exposition, she designed a square of rest inside the Casa Donoso Vineyard - located in Talca's suburbs-, with French oak wood casks." I discovered that these containers have a useful life from two to three years, for what was possessing a good quantity of material that I could re-use. On having disarmed them, I had to my disposition 1.400 staves - the curved tables with which these barrels are formed - that I was assembling up to form a plot ", she makes clear.

This way she formed a "mantle of wood" over the foliage of the grapevines, which delivers shade to the workers and tourists who visit the sector. The furniture that sets the place designed it with the same staves; taking advantage of its curves she designed a series of seats. She obtained a 6.5 for this work, for what she decided to present it to the first National Contest of Projects of Degree, organized by the Architects' College and a group of the pupils' center of the University of Chile called Warm Architecture. Of more than eighty projects participants, her stayed between six selected to show itself during the Biennial show XVI of Architecture 2008. An attractive opportunity for this architect who bets for the " noble and interesting " material ones and who declares to identify " with the frivolous structures that invade as little as possible the environment ".
